How to Stand Out and Sell More at Tradeshows and Markets

Tradeshows, artisan markets, farmers’ markets, and pop-up events can be incredible opportunities for a small business. You are not simply setting up a table and hoping people buy something. You are creating a temporary storefront where customers can discover your business, meet the person behind it, experience your products, and begin a relationship with your brand.

And sometimes, you only have a few seconds to make that first impression.

After years of participating in, organizing, and supporting markets and community events, I have learned that successful in-person selling is rarely accidental. A little strategy can make a significant difference.

Your Booth Is Your Storefront

Think about walking into a retail store. The products are not simply placed on folding tables. Retailers think carefully about lighting, height, signage, traffic flow, product groupings, and the overall customer experience.

Your market booth deserves that same attention.

Before your next event, stand back from your booth and look at it as though you have never seen your business before.

Can you immediately tell what the business sells?

Can you see the business name?

Are prices easy to find?

Is there something that draws your eye?

Does the booth invite you to come closer?

Your booth should tell customers something about your business before you ever say a word.

Get Your Products Off the Table

One of my favourite market-day tools is surprisingly simple: adjustable furniture risers.

Most standard folding tables are designed for sitting, not shopping. After customers have spent hours walking through a tradeshow or market, the last thing they want to do is continually bend over to see products.

Raising your table even a few inches can completely change the experience.

It brings your products closer to the customer’s natural line of sight, makes browsing more comfortable, and creates a more retail-like presentation.

There is another benefit: it changes how you interact with customers.

A higher table is a much more comfortable height to stand behind. Instead of sitting in a chair behind your products, you can remain standing, make eye contact, greet customers, answer questions, and naturally move into a conversation.

It is a small adjustment that can make your entire booth feel more professional.

I have put together an Amazon Market Day Must-Haves list with some of my favourite resources for setting up a successful booth. CLICK HERE

Create Height and Visual Interest

Your display should not be one flat surface.

Use crates, shelves, risers, baskets, display stands, or boxes hidden beneath your table covering to create different heights.

Think in layers:

Eye level: What do you want customers to notice first?

Hand level: What products do you want them to pick up and explore?

Table level: What supporting products can complete the display?

Your best product does not necessarily need to be the first product customers can reach. Sometimes your most visually interesting product should be higher because its job is to make someone stop.

Once they stop, you have an opportunity to sell.

Give People Room to Shop

More product does not always equal more sales.

One of the easiest mistakes to make is trying to fit everything you sell into one booth.

When customers are faced with too much information, too many products, and too many signs, they can become overwhelmed. Instead of investigating further, they keep walking.

Curate your booth.

Feature your bestsellers. Create logical product groupings. Leave some empty space. Make it easy for customers to understand what they are looking at.

You can always keep additional inventory underneath or behind your table and replenish products throughout the day.

Make Your Prices Easy to Find

Do not make customers ask, “How much is this?”

Some will ask.

Many will simply walk away.

Clear pricing removes a barrier to purchasing. Individual price tags, small signs, menu-style pricing, or attractive display cards can all work.

This is also an opportunity to introduce bundles:

One for $15 | Two for $25

Market Special

Gift Set – $40

Build Your Own Bundle

Help your customer make a purchasing decision.

Do Not Hide Behind Your Booth

Your display can attract someone, but you are part of the customer experience.

Stand when possible. Make eye contact. Smile. Say hello.

You do not need to immediately launch into a sales pitch.

Try something simple:

“Hi! Have you been to this market before?”

“Feel free to pick that up.”

“That is actually one of our most popular products.”

“Are you shopping for yourself or looking for a gift today?”

Then listen.

Good selling is often less about talking and more about paying attention.

And put your phone away. If you are looking at your phone when someone approaches, you are unintentionally telling them that they are interrupting you.

Tell the Story Behind the Product

One of the greatest advantages small businesses have at markets is something large retailers cannot easily duplicate: the person who created, selected, designed, grew, baked, or developed the product is standing right there.

Use that advantage.

Instead of only describing what something is, explain why it matters.

  • What inspired it?

  • How is it made?

  • Why did you choose that material?

  • What problem does it solve?

  • What makes it different?

People may initially stop because of your display, but your story can give them a reason to buy.

Market Before the Market

Your marketing should begin long before you arrive.

Tell your existing customers where you are going to be. Share sneak peeks of what you are bringing. Introduce a new product. Show yourself preparing your inventory. Tag the event organizer and encourage people to make the event part of their plans.

On market day, continue sharing.

Post your booth location and a photograph of your display so customers know what to look for.

The event organizer is responsible for promoting the overall event. You are responsible for giving your customers a reason to find you there.

Make Buying Easy

Customers should never have to work hard to give you money.

Have your payment system ready and tested. Charge your devices. Bring a portable charger. Have a cash float if you accept cash. Know what you will do if the Wi-Fi is unreliable.

Think about packaging too.

  • Where will purchases go?

  • Do you have bags?

  • Do fragile products need wrapping?

  • Can someone easily carry several products?

Every step from browsing to payment should feel simple.

Think Beyond Today's Sale

A successful market is not measured only by how much money is in your cash box at the end of the day.

Someone who spends $20 today could become a customer who purchases from you for years.

Give customers an easy way to find you again.

Use a QR code that leads to your website or email list. Include a business card or thank-you card with purchases. Invite customers to follow you online. Tell them where you will be next.

The goal is not simply:

Stop. Shop. Leave.

Think instead:

Stop. Connect. Shop. Remember. Return.

Prepare for the Unexpected

There are always little things that can go wrong on market day.

Tape. Scissors. Zip ties. Extension cords. Chargers. Clips. Safety pins. Cleaning wipes. Pens. Extra price tags.

They may not be exciting purchases, but when something breaks fifteen minutes before the doors open, they suddenly become very important.

I have gathered some of my favourite booth setup and market-day tools into my Amazon Market Day Must-Haves list, including those adjustable furniture risers I recommend for almost every vendor.

A successful tradeshow or market is about more than having a great product. It is about creating an environment where people notice your business, feel comfortable stopping, connect with you, and have an easy opportunity to buy.

Prepare well. Create an experience. Stand up, look people in the eye, and welcome them into your business.

Your booth may only be there for a day, but the impression you make can last much longer.
